Coordinated Iraq Bombings Kill 78 Ahead of Shiite Shrine Day
A wave of bombings in Baghdad and near Nasiriyah killed at least 78 people and wounded many as Sunni insurgents targeted Shiite Muslims. The attacks struck Sadr City and a Shiite shrine district during rush hour, with a suicide blast hitting pilgrims en route to Karbala. The strikes come amid a political crisis over a unity government and rising sectarian tensions ahead of a major Shiite holy day.
