Retirement brings end to long career for Southern Illinois economist
Eldorado native Mike Wessell, an economic analyst for the Illinois Department of Employment Security, retires after more than 35 years studying job trends in 20 Southern Illinois counties. He recalls coal era impacts, early career misgivings, and the shift to non coal business as the region evolved. He plans to travel to see his son at GE in Schaumburg and daughter at Caterpillar in Peoria, and jokes about no longer answering the phone unless it’s an invite to fish.
