Iberia and Northwest Africa Quake Strikes Peninsula

A major earthquake rocked the Iberian Peninsula and northwest Africa causing at least two deaths in Spain and Portugal and 61 injuries in Lisbon. The quake, centered in the Atlantic west of Gibraltar, was one of the strongest since 964 and triggered tremors across Morocco and northern Africa. A farmer died near Lagos, a man died of a heart attack in Sevilla, and 61 Lisbon residents were treated at San Jose Hospital.

Quake Near Lisbon Reported At 7.3 Richer Scale

Four people were reported in serious condition after a 3:41 am earthquake lasting about a minute. Lisbon Geophysics Institute recorded the quake as 7.3 on the Richter Scale with an epicenter in the ocean about 80 miles southwest of Lisbon.

Snow accumulates to 2 to 4 inches tonight

Riots in Rome as U S flags burned during Nixon visit

On the second day of anti U S protests in Rome demonstrators attacked the American Ex press and Rome Daily American buildings, set newsprint on fire, and clashed with police. A student was killed earlier, with dozens injured and hundreds detained as the Communist party backed the unrest and condemned police actions. Premier Rumor met Nixon ally Lopez, while marches continued near Palazzo Chigi and university barricades remained.

Study committee revenue report doubted by leaders

Chicago political leaders challenged a Revenue Study Committee report on the state's financial condition as the panel moves toward final recommendations for a revenue package. Viet Cong rockets sink U.S. landing craft in Da Nang attack

Viet Cong rockets battered Da Nang docking area destroying two landing craft and damaging a third. An American sailor died with 51 sailors and eight Marines wounded as 300 tons of ammunition were destroyed. Civilians were evacuated from nearby areas as North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces pressed toward Saigon amid ongoing clashes and claims of heavy enemy casualties in recent days.
