Canoeists Rescued After Flooded Creek Capsize Near Marion
William D. Kobler 24 of Marion clung to a small tree branch for over an hour in Crab Orchard Creek after a 12 foot canoe cap sized 200 yards east of the South Market Street bridge. Kobler was one of three men dumped into the chilly water as Oral Browning and Bill Cross swam ashore for help. Browning and Cross left Kobler with a citizen band radio call, fire units and a rescue boat finally reached him and he dropped to safety. He, Browning and Cross then headed to a warm house, with Kobler reporting the cold took their breath away and promising to canoe again when warmer.
