The Labor Department reported January consumer prices up one percent, with food up 1.6 percent and nonfood commodities 1.3 percent. Gasoline prices surged, and real spendable earnings fell two percent as annual inflation neared 9.4 percent, the highest since 1951.
Five armed robbers forced entry to the Cruse home in Goreville Johnson County late Thursday and held Robert G. Cruse his wife Mary Lee and sons Greg and David overnight. They then looted the Goreville State Bank vault of about 46000 dollars before fleeing by car. No injuries were reported.

They forced him to open the safe, took money, and locked him in the vault. the car was found with keys inside after dawn. His family remained indoors in fear as the assailants warned another man would stay behind.

Illinois is cited as a logical site, but the Federal Energy Office will pick sites. The package also supports coal to synthetic fuels, oil shale, a nuclear power center, solar heating, rapid drilling, and reclamation methods with strip mining pending revision.
An apparent hijacking at Baltimore Washington International Airport left three dead, including a gunman and a security guard. The Delta DC9 co pilot later died at a Baltimore hospital after the attack, while the pilot remained seriously wounded undergoing surgery.
