Commerce reports January sees a $1.8 billion rise in unemployment benefits and a $2.2 billion jump in veterans benefits boosting personal income to $1,193.6 billion annual rate. Despite the gains, income growth lags inflation as government payrolls rise and manufacturing payrolls fall.
President Ford told Democratic senators he would use federal power to raise gasoline prices more than heating oil if his energy plan survives Congress. The White House says the Federal Energy Administration will order higher petroleum charges chiefly on gasoline by March 1. Senate leaders urged cooperation as Democrats draft an alternative program.
Congress raises the federal debt ceiling to 531 billion dollars to cover payroll and expenses. The measure passes the Senate 70 to 20, sending the bill to the White House six hours before the old limit of 495 billion would be reached. President Ford’s preferred 604 billion ceiling is noted.
Gov Daniel Walker calls for drastic reforms to swift and sure punishment for criminals. He backs a legislative commission chaired by David Fogel to study fixed sentences end parole and rely on good behavior for time off. He favors equal punishment for similar crimes and possible appellate resentencing after fixed years.
Rep. Wilbur D. Mills of Arkansas is readmitted to Bethesda Naval Medical Center for further diagnostic tests. The former Ways and Means chair disclosed last year he is an alcoholic and plans to cope, with no return to the Capitol yet.
The forecast calls for a clear to partly cloudy night with temperatures in the upper teens to lower twenties. Thursday will be mostly sunny and warmer with highs around the mid forties to fifty. From Friday to Sunday expect mainly cloudy skies with a chance of rain or snow, milder Friday and Saturday.
Rescue workers searched storm wreckage in Fort Valley Georgia for more victims after a tornado killed at least two and damaged about 300 homes plus commercial buildings valued in the millions. Gov. Busbee planned a helicopter tour and sought federal disaster declaration. Joe Mullis and Fred Murphy were identified victims.
Paris report says Secretary of State Kissinger and French President Giscard d Estaing held a breakfast conference lasting over an hour. Kissinger spoke of reporting on peace prospects in the Middle East and noted progress toward a preparatory meeting with oil exporting and consuming nations. France aims to host the March preparatory talks in Paris.
Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger posed close to a huge stuffed bison at Europe’s opening of the first American Bicentennial exhibition. He balanced on one finger, called the display beautifully done and very moving.
Richard Nixon's tax lawyer Frank DeMarco Jr. and Chicago appraiser Ralph G. Newman were indicted for conspiring to defraud the United States and obstructing IRS operations. DeMarco is accused of lying to agents and blocking a congressional probe, while Newman faces conspiracy counts for aiding in a false income tax return.
Vice President Nelson Rockefeller told 46 governors at the National Governors Conference that President Ford understands state problems but must pursue the country s long term interests. He said the administration plans budget cuts, inflation, unemployment and energy costs require courage to tell the people improvements take time.
Police report that Harry Young, 69, was attacked on the Ocean Grove Bridge at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and robbed of his wallet containing 25 dollars. He later found a leather purse with 171 dollars in his shopping bag, leaving him $146 ahead. Investigating officers name two suspects and continue inquiries.
SIU at Carbondale faculty presented thirteen proposals to the Illinois Soybean Program Operating Board ending today. The panel includes fifteen of eighteen farmers representing districts 1 through 18 to oversee funds from a per-bushel check-off for research and market development. Richard Blakely of Tamaroa district 17 and Patrick Scates Jr. of Shawneetown district 18 served as district representatives and board secretary.
Frank Knnishi chairs SIUC nutrition unit proposing a low cost nutritious soyfood for the elderly. SIU C researchers Dixon Lee and Scott Hinners seek better soybean use in animal feeds. Botany prof A J Pappelis urges refinement of brown stem rot studies. Other faculty outline soybean market and production research plus weed control and yields. A four member committee will evaluate recommendations at the next meeting.
