Chessman Wins 60 Day Reprieve From Death Row

Daryl Chessman, the so called Red Light Bandit, received an eighth reprieve of execution from Gov. Edmund G. Brown at 12:05 a.m. today, delaying his gas chamber date by sixty days. Protesters gathered outside San Quentin as the governor, citing California division on capital punishment, ordered the stay while the Legislature reconvenes. Chessman, 38, has been on death row nearly 12 years for kidnapping and related crimes in Los Angeles.

More Police Bribes Told

Chicago police scandal swirled anew as an admitted burglar claimed police were paid not to arrest him. Prosecutor Frank Ferlic said Roger Burrenson supported tales by three other burglars naming North Damen District officers. Burrenson also said he took part in a burglary and $1000 in bribes were paid to two Damen District officers. The four burglars allege 16 to 15 Damen policemen received up to $100,000 from Chicago and suburbs. The scandal traces to the Summerdale District case from last January.
