The Chinese Nationalist air force reports a bomber sank a submarine off Taishan in heavy action near Formosa. They say 21 Reds vessels were sunk in the East China Sea as warships and planes attacked a supply convoy.
President Eisenhower pushes a tariff cutting bill through a tense House vote as supporters seek extra leverage to extend reciprocal trade negotiations. Opponents warn of risks to American industries while leaders rally support to curb amendments and preserve the measure.
Cloudy skies and rain expected tonight into Saturday with warmer temperatures. Lows near 40, high around 55 on Saturday. Tuesday night winds fall to the upper 20s with yesterday’s low 33 and today’s 31 at 7 am. High yesterday was 45 and noon today 48. Sunrise at 6 47 am and sunset at 5 40 pm.
Waco Texas AP report: beekeeper Jay Renfro loses 1800 buckets of honey to a Michigan broker Warrick who shipped them after Renfro’s warehouse pickup Hubbard of Onsted Michigan promised payment. Later Hubbard locates the money and Renfro recovers about $522. Renfro vows no more honey money buckets.
Springfield on February 18 AP report says a policeman, Charles L. Baugh, 29, who lost a $35,000 damage suit against John Hall, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after the jury ruled in Hall’s favor. Witnesses said Baugh accused Hall of lying outside the Sangamon County Courthouse.
Christian Pineau told the National Assembly he would push rapid ratification of the Paris and London treaties for German rearmament and seek new talks with Russia. He urged East West trade, a Western European Union armaments agency, and global disarmament. Victory would end the two week crisis sparked by Mendes France’s overthrow. backing appeared uncertain with fewer than 290 votes pledged in the 627 seat assembly.
Detroit reports Floyd Diamond 16 confessed to stabbing and bludgeoning Kathleen McLaughlin 9 after rough play near a Franklin Knolls pond. Prosecutor Ziem said the juvenile could face murder charges. the body was found after her father discovered her lost in the ice rimmed pond.
Odell Jeffries pled guilty to attacking 14 year old Janice Wells with a hatchet in Clovis New Mexico. He faces twenty five years in the state prison after confessing Wednesday night. Janice remains hospitalized with facial wounds. Her mother Aileen Wells cried at arraignment, saying her daughter will be scarred for life.
Federal grand jury in St Louis recessed to Feb 28 after four days of renewed inquiry into the Greenlease ransom. Cab driver John Hager testified about the kidnapping plot linked to Carl Hall and the missing ransom funds. Miss Polly Lane, aunt of Sandra O Day, testified about Hager’s visit to her DuQuoin home and a supposed "live wire" in the case.
The Thursday collision near Carrier Mills killed Gail Barger 40 and Harold Wibele 23, both from Carrier Mills, Erner Gray 32 of Racine Wisconsin, and Urah Cobbs 32 also of Racine. Cobbs wife Willa 28 is hospitalized in fair condition with facial injuries.
A blizzard and cold wave hit the Rockies and western plains with gusts up to 50 mph. Snow drifts forced highway closures across Wyoming and northern Colorado. Air travel in Wyoming halted and Cheyenne bus lines reported all outbound vehicles held.

Hermann Field, 44, claims five years in a Communist Poland cellar and $50,000 indemnity from Warsaw after wrongful arrest. He says he cannot explain the Field family disappearances linked to Noel Field and notes no plans to return to the United States. Field recounts Polish treatment, convalescence costs, and his hunger strike protests that led to compensation.
An almost new automobile was damaged when a 30 ton Walker Bulldog tank struck it on a Columbus street. Sgt. John Haller said he chose hitting the parked car to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle. The tank was en route to Ohio State University ROTC department.
