A public hearing on Crab Orchard refuge recreational development drew about 800 people. Labor representatives pressed for job provisions while the National Fish and Wildlife Service pushed a three point plan for public and group use, with a future hearing planned to refine recommendations.
Evan Dale of the Southern District council of the International Hod Carriers and Laborers AFL proposed a 12 point alternative to the National Fish and Wildlife Service report on Crab Orchard refuge. The plan covers public works, lodge facilities, zoning for private building, recreational development, roads, fishing studies, advertising, a development association, forestry cooperation, coordinated recreation with state parks, attracting industry, and local vocational education. Dale's motion to adopt the proposals passed as part of the official hearing record.
Fish and Wildlife officials and labor representatives met over the Little Grassy dam dispute and possible reallocation of $20,000. Debate centered on hiring non union labor versus prevailing union patterns, with Salyer urging contract work and possible project hold until full funding arrives. Evan Dale pledged to seek Washington settlement as labor appeals.

Kenneth Mastin of Joliet and Rosemary Steffes of Minooka helped reach Mrs Neid Schwartz after a December 1948 collision south of Joliet. Last night her husband Peter Schwartz, 54, of Channahon, was killed when his car plunged through a guard rail and overturned near the same scene.

Negotiations between Sangamo Electrics at Or dill and District 50 United Mine Workers of America focus on a 10 cent per hour across the board wage increase for about 750 workers. Current wages range 75 cents to $1.80 per hour under incentive pay. the old contract expires March 1 after roughly 30 days of talks.
Dr E Vincent Hale 80 a pioneer Union county physician died at his Anna home on South Street after weeks of illness. He practiced in Southern Illinois for over 50 years and held many civic roles including treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church. His funeral plans are pending his son James Norbert Hale arriving from Atlanta.
Clark county judge reports county treasurer John J. Metz 42 took responsibility for a missing seven thousand dollars. Metz, a World War II veteran with a leg loss, is in Jefferson Barracks Army Hospital awaiting brain surgery. No charges yet, audit pending. grand jury to consider matter March 13.
Coroner Sam Simmon's inquest ruled the death of Alva Cooksey an accident. The 70-year-old Marion insurance salesman died from head and body injuries after being struck by a truck driven by Glas ser Redman of Beckville Texas near Marion on Route 37 while entering his car. No charges were filed against Redman.
Robert A. Vogeler, 38, an American ITT executive and U S army intelligence officer, pleaded guilty to espionage charges in Budapest. He testified he was instructed to aid atom physicists and help them escape, seeking a mild sentence.
A crowded Long Island railroad collision near Rockville Centre killed 29 and wounded about 100 as two electric trains on a gauntlet track collided during a grade crossing project. Motorman Jacob Kiefer was charged with second degree manslaughter. the crash occurred amid widespread chaos with dozens of victims treated at area hospitals.
