Carbondale Leads National Energy Saving Push
Carbondale will join 17 other cities in a federally funded Community Energy Project to train homeowners and renters in weatherization. Kits costing 35 to 50 dollars will be provided, with free or reduced pricing for low income. The effort is coordinated by ACTION and funded with 300000 dollars from the Department of Energy.

Herrin Allen Industries blast injures plant workers
A Herrin plant blast at Allen Industries injured seven workers and forced shutdowns as fire crews battled a blaze fed by airlay lines and German machinery in a multi hour incident. Bosses cited probable mechanical failure. Injured workers included Pauline Jennings, Robert Doering, Bill Stacy, Flo Craig, Mike Cluck, Joe Perruquet, and Robert Arnsmeyer.

Wholesale prices rise as food costs fall in January
Wholesale prices jumped 1.6 percent in January the largest monthly gain since 1974 propelled by higher gasoline and home heating oil prices. The Fed raised the discount rate to 13 percent as inflation worries spiked and investors pushed the Dow down. Consumer durables, such as flatware and jewelry, rose sharply while finished food products declined due to lower beef and pork prices. New home prices fell 1.6 percent in late 1979.

SIU C student leader meets Carter aides in White House

The National Weather Service forecasts intermittent rain tonight changing to light snow with a low in the mid to upper 20s. Saturday will be mostly cloudy and colder with a chance of snow flurries and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. Tonight’s precipitation risk is near 100 percent, 30 percent Saturday. Illinois extended forecast shows fair skies Sunday through Tuesday with moderating temperatures. Highs Sunday in the 30s warming to the 40s by Tuesday. Sunday lows in the teens to low 20s warming to the 30s by Tuesday.

Freeman Coal official charged with unlawful restraint
Franklin County State's Attorney Terry Hopkins issued a warrant for Richard Rouse vice president for operations at Freeman United Coal Co on a felony charge of unlawful restraint. The action stems from a January 17 incident at T E Mine Tool and Supply in Christopher involving miners from Freeman No 3 mine. Rend Lake protects heron nesting by closing area to boats
The U S Army Corps of Engineers will close a 40 acre section known as the Big Muddy heron zone at Rend Lake near Nason from March 1 through July 31 to protect the nesting great blue heron population. The action follows a 71 percent statewide drop since 1970. A second colony in the Casey Fork area is being monitored but less affected. Lake manager Phil Jenkins expects postings by mid March.
