A Building Utilization Study Committee in Carbondale recommends closing one of seven elementary schools due to falling enrollments but declines to name which school. A public hearing is urged with Feb 21 board review and study of district facilities and alternatives.

Jackson County deputy Robert Burns was shot in the elbow and a bullet proof vest deflected a second bullet during a shoot-out at the home of Delyte Morris southeast of Carbondale. SIU officers and Burns were aided by Sheriff Don White and Officer Nelson Ferry as the suspect Lyman Moore was wounded in the abdomen and arm and faces pending charges.

Carter backs international commission on Iran grievances

Fire at Allen Industries plant near Herrin prompts response

Firefighters from Herrin Carterville and Royalton battled an undetermined extent blaze at the Allen Industries plant northwest of Herrin. The Herrin department answered a 1:30 pm call after an explosion and fire reports with two trucks on scene and aid from nearby towns. Unconfirmed reports indicated up to three injuries. The fire was centered in the northwest section of the large facility.
