Reds widen offensive to the west driving a wedge seven miles southwest of Hoengsong. Attacks extend toward Yongdungpo and fight U N units southeast of the city. Central sector shows signs of a possible push against the U S 1st Cavalry and 24th divisions of the 9th corps.
Chinese forces massed in central Korea pushed down mountain valleys toward the Wonju Yoju road and swept from Hoengsong, driving Allied units back up to 18 miles. General MacArthur warned the enemy still has manpower and supplies. Allied air power struck the Red attack as U N and South Korean troops reorganized to hold the central front.
The GOP faced internal disputes over foreign policy and anti communist rhetoric during Lincoln Day speeches nationwide. Delegates urged budget cuts while debate highlighted unity versus obstructionism and the impact of McCarthy era attacks. Senators defended McCarthy. Dewey urged a global Monroe Doctrine and firm American leadership against Soviet aggression.

New York February 13 AP Navy official Dr Urner Liddel says flying saucers were plastic balloons used in high altitude cosmic ray studies. Balloons 100 feet wide rose to 19 miles, winds up to 200 mph, sunlit bottoms looked saucer like.
Washington reports Sen. Earle Clements said a union denied claims Illinois workers would receive hiring priority for the Paducah Kentucky atomic energy plant project. Union president John Garvey assured no discrimination or orders. The pool tied Paducah Cairo and Chicago locals, with 243 Kentuckians and 88 Illinois workers hired by Feb. 9.
Los Angeles on Lincoln's birthday Congressman Dewey Short of Missouri urged a new Lincoln era and said the country needs not only another Abraham Lincoln but a good five cent nickel.
Mrs Katherine Greensalde Lyon, aged 103, says daily whisky helps her live long. She plans no big party for her 104th birthday, only a small gathering at her daughter’s home to share cake and memories.
Rep. Fred Busbey said he is an official associate of Paul Harvey in a national security investigation. Harvey was held after an unauthorized entry to the Argonne National Laboratory grounds near Chicago.

The Illinois Liquor Control Commission will today hear an appeal from a Mounds mayoral license decision granting licenses to four tavern operators where slot machines were found. Five residents including two ministers allege city ordinance violations by permitting gambling. slots were seized last fall and fines paid.
Actor Vincent Price unveils a one piece zoot suit designed by his wife Mary Grant. The tuxedo style garment joins jacket and trousers with hidden fastenings and a front zipper, inspired by pilots’ flying suits from World War II. Price says it halves dressing time and sparks curiosity and sales chatter among guests.
Bitter feud escalates as Sen. J. William Fulbright accuses adviser Dawson of influencing RFC loan making. President Truman reappoints RFC board, prompting Fulbright to block Senate confirmation. Support comes from Sen. Paul Douglas and Sen. Burnett Maybank who urge Dawson to testify and clear the matter.
United Nations General Assembly set to dispose of two Russian resolutions accusing the United States and its Seventh Fleet of aggression against Communist China. Both measures were crushed in committee with broad opposition from non Soviet blocs and only Soviet bloc votes in favor. The assembly is not expected to reopen formal debate, though blocs may offer explanations of vote.
Centralia Feb. 13 AP One of three men injured in a railroad yards explosion and five died today. Robert Penwarden 55 of Beardstown Illinois conductor for Chicago Burlington and Quincy was killed when a gasoline tank car exploded during switching operations in the yards on Centralia north side Sunday night. Flames enveloped two cabooses and three occupants Penwarden and George Widdows 52 also of Beardstown were burned as they fled through fire Thomas Harn 62 Beardstown conductor in the other caboose suffered shock
Springfield reports extremely hazardous driving conditions due to ice on roads north of a line through Quincy Springfield and Champaign. Snow has caused some one way traffic in the northwest portion of Illinois.
Four deputies will meet in Paris from March 10 to 15 to set terms place and date for an eventual meeting of foreign ministers from the United States Britain France and the Soviet Union a French government official said today.
The U S Bureau of Mines reported Northern Illinois and Wisconsin mines produced 25 607 short tons and Southern Illinois and Kentucky 6 510 tons last year. The national total reached 618 207 short tons, up four percent from 1949.
Chicago reports indicate Mrs. Dorothy Stevens, 23, is resting comfortably after extreme hypothermia. Doctors have not ruled out amputations. A hospital spokesman said she is fed a high calorie regimen including milk shakes and ice cream to restore energy following admission with a body temperature around 64 degrees.
Selective Service told local draft boards they may cancel induction orders for college and high school students who intend to enlist and apply for cancellation before school ends. Students must apply in writing and notify they wish to enlist in their chosen branch. A 30 day postponement starts after the current school term, with blanket postponement until term end for students in school.
