Jackson County special census shows higher unincorporated population

Jackson County will likely report a larger population in unincorporated areas after a special census. A preliminary tally lists 16,944 residents outside cities, about 3,900 more than the 1970 figure, with an official count pending. The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees unanimously re-elected Ivan Elliott Jr. as chairman Harris Rowe as vice chairman and Margaret Blackshere as secretary for one-year terms.
