Sir Lancelot of Barwan the Old English Sheepdog from Cana won best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club’s 99th Dog Show held Tuesday at Madison Square Garden New York. Other dogs won their breed titles in the event.
President Ford cautions Americans to expect a quicker jobless surge but says unemployment will peak under 10 percent and then ease by year’s end. He announced $2 billion in highway funds to create 125,000 plus construction jobs and outlined plans after talks in Topeka. He also warned of potential Middle East tensions if progress stalls and defended meetings with Connally amid legal cases.
In Madison, the AP notes that Duncan Y-Yos parent Flambeau Products Corp. sees booming Yo-Yo demand as recessions reduce spending on basketballs. Comptroller William Reck attributes higher sales to consumers with tighter budgets choosing affordable toys.

The Senate Finance Committee approved 11 to 2 a House bill to block Ford's $3 per barrel oil import tax for 90 days and sent it to the Senate floor where debate will begin next week. The panel also unanimously approved raising the national debt ceiling from 495 to 531 billion through June 30. Absenteeism hindered action on the tariff and a Democratic energy task force could not advance its alternate plan.
The United Mine Workers Executive Board meeting failed to censure or cut the Miller staff size. LeRoy Patterson, a board member and Boyle ally, declared he is not finished and will continue challenging the staff makeup of Arnold R. Miller.
President Ford announced release of two billion dollars in impounded highway funds to spur construction employment. At least six states including Illinois may fail to provide required matching funds, while 17 others can meet the match. The program targets 125000 new jobs with first come first served distribution.
A Marion garden equipment plant will employ 20 to 25 workers at start, with Paul Stephens opening Armco Engineering and Development Co at 920 E Main. The firm will make garden push plows and other gear and hire via Illinois Employment Service and SIU Carbondale. Also near completion is a Kerasotes Theater at Town and Country Village, opening between March 1 and 10. The chamber praised Mayor Butler and city council for the Civic Center.
Norman Ellis of Ellis Construction proposes a 75,000 square foot shopping center on Murphysboro north side along Business Illinois 13 between the Jackson County Nursing Home and WINI. The $1.5 million project would include five large and twelve small stores with five acres of parking. The plan seeks city utilities, annexation, and police and fire coverage to satisfy EPA rules and financing needs.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat spent four hours in Cairo discussing possible Egyptian concessions for an Israeli pullback in Sinai. Both indicated progress and optimism, with Kissinger noting clarified issues and a clear direction for negotiations as Sadat affirmed the moment’s sufficiency. Kissinger carried a detailed Israeli position from Jerusalem, including steps toward ending the Arab boycott and allowing cargo through the Suez Canal.
