A Murphysboro High School Key Club crew cleared sidewalks for about 85 senior and handicapped residents. Faculty adviser Bob Hall described this as a recurring winter effort, with students turning a chore into community help despite playful snowball tosses at a local client, John A. Lo.
The National Weather Service expects partly cloudy and colder conditions tonight with lows from 10 to 18. Tuesday remains mostly sunny with a high in the low 30s. An extended Illinois forecast calls for fair, cold conditions Wednesday to Friday with lows around 15 to 25 and highs in the low 30s.
In Murphysboro Hall and the Senior Citizens Center coordinate with the local Key Club to shovel snow for elderly clients. About 100 members split into five wards to clear walks, with teens noting they expect help will be needed again, and seniors expressing appreciation for the effort.
Four inmates from the New Mexico State Prison riot arrived at Marion federal prison. Seven of nearly 300 survivors transferred to the federal system are to be placed at Marion. The men were housed in the G-Unit away from the general population while officials review backgrounds and safety for integration.

Kennedy claims momentum for New Hampshire, while Carter supporters tout a home-state victory that may influence delegates and future primaries. Maine's 22 nominating votes will be distributed by proportional shares at the May 16 state convention.
Iranian President Bani Sadr suggested backers might release the American hostages without the shah’s extradition, while Pars contradicted the quote. Tehran marked the revolution’s anniversary with a massive parade where a grandstand collapsed injuring about 50, none foreigners among the wounded. The protests and diplomacy unfolded as Khomeini urged continued struggle against the United States, and Brezhnev sent a cordial anniversary message.
Fifth graders at Jordan School in Denfor created 50 original Valentines as a project inspired by daily discussions of the hostage situation. Teacher Pat Parker says the cards will be sent to the American Embassy for delivery by Thursday. The display shows a heart with 50 flags and notes the days hosts have been held.
