One of the session’s heaviest fights centers on a House motor vehicle license bill. It would cut fees for passenger cars and trucks, with a mileage based tax after 15 000 miles for heavy trucks and penalties for high mileage “cum road” trucks. Out-of-state trucks would also be taxed by mileage.
Five people died in a head on collision about 25 miles south of St. Louis. Charles Sligar and his wife Natalie were en route to St Petersburg, Florida from East St Louis. The other car carried Daniel Reed, Robert Brown and James Mason, all teenagers from Missouri suburbs of St Louis.
Film star Elizabeth Taylor wife of producer Mike Todd was taken to a hospital today for treatment of a recurring back ailment. Todd said it might be nothing but they would not take chances as she was placed on a stretcher.

Two Illinois women and an Alabama motorist were killed in a two car collision near Huntsville Alabama. The dead are Henrietta M. Gist 66 of Chicago Mabel Bridhoff 74 of Danville Illinois and Lawrence Herbert 78 of Decatur Alabama. The Illinois women were en route to Florida.
The 165 foot coastal tanker Chelsea sank in 60 feet of water off Rockport hours after Coast Guard saved the crew. The vessel, refloated from a submerged breakwater, ran aground earlier. Oil Co. of East Boston valued the ship at 250000 and oil aboard at 30000.
A collision in New York harbor caused the 6,625 ton Marine Courier to catch fire in two forward holds. There were no injuries reported. The incident occurred early today and crews responded promptly.
The government shows farm price support losses totaling 2.894 billion dollars in the current period with 1.111 billion dollars in the previous 20 years, bringing the overall post 1933 losses to about 4.005 billion. Wartime sales reduced earlier losses, while recent deficits rose as deficits accelerated.
Feb 11 AP report states 43 year old musician George Liberace was robbed early morning near a hotel. He sustained three deep cuts requiring 16 stitches and loss of cash including 50 and 90 dollars as two men fled in a car.
A man was found dead in a truck on the Old Peabody 18 road between Benton and West Frankfort around 12 30 p m Franklin County officials said he had likely been identified as Oscar Thomas Coroner Barney Browning said death was apparently due to natural causes
State Sen. Paul Broyles of Mount Vernon was much improved at Illinois Masonic Hospital after emergency surgery for acute appendicitis performed Saturday. The 61 year old legislator was hospitalized in Chicago.
Robert Baker. 26, and his wife Trudy. 17, were booked in Prosser Washington on an Illinois murder warrant tied to the Dec 26 killing of Marine Private Larry M. Kick, 21. Kick's body was found in a weed field near Xenia after being pursued from his Winslow Indiana home en route to Crane Indiana.

A statewide search is under way for Gilbert Heck 36 of Mt Vernon and William Ford 31 of Peoria who escaped from Warren County jail by a tunnel dug under a steam pipe tunnel after plumbers worked on it. Heck faces grand larceny charges and Ford faces related charges and both were awaiting trial.
Police logged two weekend crashes in Carbondale with no injuries. At 5 45 p m Saturday a collision at Shoffner address involved Robert D Shoffner 20 and Thomas V Morris 23. Earlier at 1 10 p m Saturday another crash on North Illinois avenue and West Jackson street involved Robert Samuel Yuill 18 and Paul Doetch 39.

Prime Minister Harold Macmillan told Parliament he will meet President Eisenhower in Bermuda from March 21 to 24. He said the talks would cover a very wide scope with many global questions to discuss.
