Sulphuric acid car derails as 26 cars leave ICG track
A Southern Illinois Illinois Central Gulf freight train derailed near Dongola on the south edge of town when the 21st car carrying sulphuric acid overheated. While the acid car left the tracks the contents did not spill. No injuries were reported and traffic was diverted while cleanup and inspections proceeded.

Train Derailment Rocks Dongola Backyards In Dawn Incident
At 12 20 a m a Illinois Central Gulf freight derailed scattering 26 railroad cars along the track near Mill Street in Dongola. Residents, including Mrs Shirley Simmerman and Myrtle Dillon, described it as a loud roar and a vibrating, frightening event with cars landing near yards and the old Dongola Produce Co buildings. Danny Ferguson watched the scene from his mobile home and aided until 2 a m fearing explosions or leaks.
