Judge blocks raise in state school aid payments

Circuit Court Judge J. Waldo Ackerman barred the state Board of Education from increasing monthly state aid to local districts. He ruled only one twelfth of appropriated funds may be distributed monthly, blocking the November board vote to boost payments by 2.5 million dollars. Quiet crowd mourns Carlyle train truck victims

AP reports mourners crowded two Carlyle funeral parlors to honor nine children and a grandfather killed when a Baltimore and Ohio freight train struck a pickup and camper at 56 miles per hour. A mass funeral was planned for Henry Lowe and six grandchildren in the Carlyle High School gym, with services for other youths arranged separately.
