In Italy documentaries and roadshows highlight E.R.P. and U.S.A. machine aids while France sees mixed public sentiment amid Communist strength and limited publicized gratitude under E.C.A. leadership.
Luther R. Moses a 69 year old former merchant in Evington Virginia notes a remarkable run of family events. Odell his wife aged 35 brought the couple a daughter in January 1915 and married in January 1948. The twins followed in January 1949 and January 1950 making four children in two years. He calls it a curiosity and says January has been their big month.
Ernest Stanton, 52, of Coulterville, was released on a $5,000 bond as he awaits action by the Randolph County grand jury on charges tied to a street stabbing Saturday night. Buddy Lockhart, 18, also of Coulterville, was stabbed in the heart and is in critical condition at Red Bud Hospital after an on street argument.
East Germany's Volkskammer passed two laws creating a state security ministry to direct a secret police force and forcing about three million youths in the Free German Youth to join. The measures resemble 1930s Gestapo and Hitler Youth, with Deputy Prime Minister Ulbricht hailing increased Soviet German friendship and anti Americanism. The police bill, led by Karl Steinhoff, targets enemy agents and promises a broad informer network modeled on Russia's MVD.

Railroads cut 25 percent of coal burning freight and 50 percent of passenger services, with 34 400 workers idled nationwide and several blast furnaces and schools shutting down in Chicago Cleveland Youngstown and Delphi.

A Saline County Circuit court jury in Harrisburg awarded $3450 to a Carmi couple in a case against Carbondale Harrisburg bus lines. Mrs. Yvonne McElroy received $2500 for injuries from a collision in April 1948, and Vernon McElroy got $950 for auto damages.
The Justice Department charged Parke-Davis & Co. of Detroit and Eli Lilly & Co. of Indianapolis with attempting to monopolize hard gelatin capsule sales used for vitamin pills and medicines. It said the firms control capsule making and filling machinery to obtain and maintain a monopoly.
GOP leaders push to bring up the Fair Employment Practices Committee bill within two weeks. Sen Taft and others urge action to curb a likely Southern filibuster as Democrats weigh delaying tactics and a House approved Displaced Persons bill.
Two passenger trains on the Illinois Central will be removed from the schedule following an Interstate Commerce Commission order. Train 205 from St Louis to Carbondale and train 226 from Carbondale to St Louis will run today and tomorrow but the order takes effect Saturday February 11 reducing passenger service by 25 percent to conserve coal.
President Truman's fact finding board finished coal dispute hearings and aims to deliver a report by Saturday. The 370,000 striking miners may be ordered back to work by Attorney General McGrath after the report. Chair Cole said negotiations clarified the deadlock and left a clearer posture for possible settlement.
A Monday meeting set for February 13 will involve Federal and State conciliators and all parties in the Little Grassy dam project dispute. Eugene Crawford says in Crab Orchard refuge office the conference aims to settle wage protest and picket-line issues that led to Interior Department halting the $20,000 project on January 25. Regional Refuge Supervisor F. C. Gillett represents the U S Fish and Wildlife Service with two state conciliators named Louis Meissner and Oscar Elfenbach. Federal conciliator and area craft union representatives await announcement.
St. Louis man Armand H. Verdin, 27, charged with speeding past a bridge toll to avoid 25 cents paid a total fine of 26.50 after pleading guilty to careless driving before Magistrate Anthony Fassler.
The Ohio River crest near Shawneetown reached 51.1 feet and prompted closures on routes 13 to Shawneetown and 1 to 146 north of Cave in Rock in southern Illinois. A 51.5 foot crest was forecast for tomorrow barring more rain as 1.5 inches fell in the valley. normal flood stage is 33 feet.
Chicago February 9 AP two railroad unions vote to strike for a 40 hour week. Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors cover about 200000 workers. spokesman says no strike date set and mediator act prevents action before late spring.
Kent Keller of Ava former congressman from the 26th district and Democratic candidate for the April primary entered Herrin Hospital with pneumonia. Doctors said he was feeling better the next morning and would remain in the hospital for several days. Keller, age 82, said he had a cold for a month and a fever in recent days but did not bed down until Tuesday night.
Canton Illinois police chief Clyde R. Duncan announced his resignation to pursue business, with the effective date set for March 1. The move ends his tenure as head of the Canton Police Department.
Police questioned four men and a woman in Detroit after seizing a paper bag with 37,150 dollars in cash. Investigators, aided by the FBI, checked for ties to the Brink's Inc. $1.5 million Boston robbery as Boston and other eastern cities were alerted. The five were stopped in a car at 3 15 a.m. with 28 000 in 100 dollar bills and 9 150 in 50 dollar bills.
Three people were killed and a fourth seriously injured in a head on collision on state Route 127 six miles south of Hillsboro Illinois. Max L. McGibnay 22 Herschel Reed 22 and Mrs Glenn Frame 39 and daughter Evelyn 16 died of injuries. Reed was hospitalized then moved to St. Louis. The Frames were Hillsboro Junior High basketball coach and wife and daughter returning from Greenville organ lesson. Fog and wet pavement cited as causes with no witnesses.
Lloyd Seeley of White Hall has been named superintendent of speed at the Illinois State Fair to run the racing events from August 11 to 20. He succeeds Robert Hancock of Salem.
An estimated 25 carloads of roving men forced the closures of at least five small coal mines in Western Williamson county. A mine owner said some threatened to blow up the mines unless they were closed, affecting both union and non union sites. No violence was reported and authorities received no formal complaints. Mines named include Clark and Singleton slope mine near Cambria and several others around Crab Orchard lake.
Southern Illinois divisional finals in the American Legion oratorical contest will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Murphysboro Township High School. Districts 22 23 24 and 25 compete though District 23 is not represented. Contestants Norman Megeer John Wells and Diana Copeland will deliver two talks each. Floyd McCracken will supervise. The public is invited.
Harrisburg voters will decide in a special election about a city proposal to raise water rates. The measure follows council approval last December and seeks to fund a $300,000 expansion by issuing bonds after a petition from 1,100 residents.
Clyde Lewis national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will visit the Veterans Administration hospital at Marion tomorrow afternoon. Mrs. Floyd Johnson says the visit is scheduled for 3 p.m. Afterward he will present the VFW citizenship award to Dr. Andy Hall of Mount Vernon at a banquet at the Masonic temple at 7:30 p.m.
