Vice Admiral Pride reports evacuation complete for the north, while south Tachen proceeds through night with 14 Nationalist ships aiding. Beds and schools prepared in Keelung to shelter refugees.
Springfield February 8 AP The Illinois Commerce Commission heard Bell Telephone Co. request for a rehearing of a commission order denying a 24.9 million dollar annual rate increase chief counsel Leslie N Jones challenged the commission's finding that Bell's plant value was 627 million dollars He noted the 1953 16 percent increase set fair value at 586 million and claimed it has risen by 108 million since then He also criticized the commission's 5.5 percent fair rate of return finding
Lorenzo E. Morin, 29, was sentenced to two months in the House of Correction for robbing church poor boxes. Police say he used a cane tip with bubble gum, lit a candle at the altar, knelt in prayer, and slipped the cane into a coat to lift coins.
