Washington reports shocked lawmakers after a Russian jet shot down a U.S. transport plane. The State Department confirms the incident with grim warning phrases allegedly heard on Capitol Hill. Early estimates list six to possibly 17 victims.
A series of three crashes across the United States leaves at least five dead and a continuing Atlantic search for an Air Force weather plane. The week’s air fatalities rise to 87 with 13 missing and 12 aboard the weather plane.
The White House said President Eisenhower would weigh a trip to the Soviet Union if future events show it would aid peace. Press secretary Hagerty noted no current plans and that Khrushchev’s invitation appeared in a hostile Kremlin speech. He stressed the president would act only if a visit serves the cause of peace.
Oklahoma City reports a shift as 33 year old Gov Edmondson pursues repeal. Public safety chief Joe Cannon leads patrols to curb bootlegging from neighboring states while whisky and bourbon prices rise and access tightens.
Rep Kenneth Gray reports Crab Orchard Refuge in Illinois was chosen as the top site for a planned $10 million federal maximum security prison. The selection followed Bennett testimony to a House subcommittee, with alternate sites listed in Illinois and Missouri and a two year construction plan beginning if approved.
Pauline Weiss, 48, a private secretary for Willard Griffin of the publishing firm R. L. Pol, allegedly tried to hire a hood to kill Muriel Griffin in Philadelphia. Detective Peter Noga was paid 75 to start, with 525 more promised. Weiss admitted the plot during questioning and faces charges of solicitation and attempt to commit murder.
Evanston residents file petitions with 6 629 signatures seeking an April 7 referendum on abandoning the city manager system. Henry A. Dorland, a petitioner, says five years of manager rule brought high taxes and extra bond issues. Dorland resigned as fire marshal after manager Bert Johnson ordered integration of fire and police.
Illinois Rep Harold R Collier estimates that eight of 1983 Congress opening day bills, spanning education to pensions, could push next year’s outlays to over 117 billion dollars. With defense and existing commitments, total would exceed 160 billion, more than twice Eisenhower's 77 billion dollar recommendation.
In Fairfield California on February 6 police arrested Charles McArthur 40 of Dixon after an armed kidnapping of Mrs Hilda Faye Dawson 65 from her rancher husband at their home. The suspect demanded 100000 by Tuesday and fled at speeds over 120 mph before wrecking the car and being captured. Mrs Dawson who was tied fell free and was not seriously injured.
U.S. Attorney General sues Macon County Alabama registrars in federal court alleging racially biased denial of Negro voter qualifications. The complaint lists 20 qualified Black citizens refused registration and cites segregated facilities, irregular hours, and stricter standards.
Cloudy conditions persist in Southern Illinois with increased warmth expected Saturday. Tonight will be partly cloudy and milder than recent nights with lows in the 20s. By unanimous consent the Senate cut 100 million dollars from its 565 million dollar airport aid bill and shortened the program from five to four years. Senate leaders, including Lyndon B. Johnson, framed the move as meeting Eisenhower halfway. Johnson also led trimming of a housing bill, which passed 60 to 28 and moves to the House, amid budget considerations for the coming year.
Four Black children aged 1 to 4 died in a two room frame house fire near Austell Georgia late Thursday night authorities said. The blaze swept through the residence damaging surrounding property and triggering a continuing investigation by local fire officials.
In Wilmington Delaware Jose Longoria 32 slashed his four year old son Steven to death with a pocket knife inside the Warner Theater during a film. The boy died soon after. The mother Violet 25 was treated for shock. Longoria had been released from jail only last Thursday after time for drunken driving and had come to discuss custody.
