A series of snow slides swept down a canyon onto a mining town killing Clarence Weaver, 56, and injuring three others. A mother and daughter were buried alive for about ninety minutes before rescue, while another woman survived a roof collapse. About 1000 residents evacuated as more slides hit, and a frail effort to free victims continued through dawn.
Senator O Mahoney said a rise in gasoline prices after U S oil shipments to Europe does not seem justified. He spoke as hearings continued with executives from 15 major oil corporations slated to testify about a voluntary emergency oil pool for Europe.
Police chief said Beverly Puetz claimed she drowned her three children Debra Lynn Cora Lynn and John in a Park Ridge home bathtub then tried to kill herself by various methods including electrocution ammonia and gas. Husband Richard Puetz testified he found the unconscious family after a January fire and a note said I failed you and I couldn't go on. jury ruled homicide in the children's deaths.
Herrin police solved a series of small thefts by four teenage boys. They admitted stealing $10 from a church purse and $5 from a March of Dimes drive container. The ringleader moved to Herrin pen. no charges yet, to be presented to County Judge A. R. Cagle. A separate fire at Leroy Brooks residence caused about $25 damage.
Edward Lee Bennie Bedwell released on a $20,000 bond from Cook County Jail after signing and retracting a confession to the killings of Barbara Grimes aged 15 and her sister Patricia 13. Bondsman Morris Brown of Champaign arranged the bond. Bedwell’s attorney David Bradshaw spoke of possible rehabilitation efforts.
A propane air gas leak caused three explosions in Reno downtown, destroying five buildings. Two people died and 41 were injured or unaccounted. rescuers later found five more missing. Officials traced pockets of gas and warned residents to evacuate as investigators seek the leak source.
In late 1949 investigators close in on Klaus Fuchs, then head of Theoretical Physics at Harwell. A Gestapo file item and Gouzenko records link Fuchs to Soviet espionage, with MI5 shadowing him as evidence tightens around the famed atom scientist.
The National Research Council distributes a government report on a family size plastic underground shelter. A prefabricated twelve by five foot tube could be installed quickly in a yard and provide sleeping space for two adults and two children at an estimated $400.
Springfield February 4 A bill to divide the Third Judicial Circuit into two districts passed 21 to 0 in the Senate judiciary committee. The plan would keep St Clair Randolph Monroe Washington and Perry Counties in the present district and form a new 18th district. Circuit dockets are congested with backlogs of 1500 law and 900 chancery cases in St Clair and 1057 law and 856 chancery in Madison.
Royal guns boomed across London on February 6 to mark the fifth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. The day honored the queen's long reign with ceremonial salutes and public tributes.
Farmers Union delegates plan to vote Friday on a proposal to send a committee directly to Gov. William G. Stratton and the state insurance office over a two year dispute. President Ralph S. Bradley said the group will address life and auto policy issues and push for faster action on applications while noting rapid growth to about 40 000 voting members in 15 000 family groups for 1956 57. The union’s Springfield headquarters will relocate to 200 East Jefferson Street after March.
A two-vehicle collision occurred at the Monroe Street and Park Avenue corner in Herrin at about 11 15 a m. No injuries were reported. Drivers were Bill Tackett age 25 of Egyptian Heights and Robert Ladd age 62 of Herrin. Ladd was turning left onto Park Avenue when the crash happened. Police ticketed Tackett for careless driving and improper start or stop and for driving without an opera.
President Eisenhower told a news conference the government may use inflation controls if business and labor do not achieve voluntary restraint. He urged U N pressure on Israel to withdraw from Gaza and the Gulf of Aqaba, and noted no direct reply on possible U N sanctions. He also announced Gordon Gray will replace Arthur Flemming as head of the Office of Defense Mobilization.
Frank Urekar of 506% S Logan St Carbondale reported a spare wheel stolen from his car while parked at Southern Illinois University on Monday night. The theft was reported to police Tuesday.
