Washington reports federal wage and price controls near termination with April 30 expiry and Eisenhower opposition to extension. Wage Board staff received notices of possible job loss by March 5 as enforcement agencies dismantle control machinery and anticipate imminent decontrol orders on items like beef and appliances.
Springfield February 4 AP Attorney General Latham Castle ruled that townships or road districts must levy a local road and bridge tax at least .10 percent of property value to qualify for state gasoline tax shares. A county unit road district is eligible if it also levies the tax. Funds not raised by districts that fail to qualify are reallocated among eligible districts in the same county.

Deaths topped 1,613 with Holland reporting 1,053 and Britain 377, while 80,000 homeless and widespread damage were tallied.
Mrs. Maxine Moss, 25, polio survivor, holds her six-month-old son Randy for the first time at her Hillsboro relatives’ home after a 420 mile trip from Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek. Randy was born Aug. 13, days after her illness began and while she was in an iron lung. The visit includes daughter Linda, four, and the couple praise local helpers and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. They return to hospital and duty soon.
Springfield Feb 4 Gov William G Stratton appoints John M Bookwalter a 42 year old Danville lawyer to fill the seat of Judge Albert H Manus on the Illinois Parole and Pardon Board. Bookwalter will serve a four year term following replacements of Victor I Knowles and Joseph G Carpentier.
A fourth attempt to end the three week strike idling 3 500 workers at the Joppa Steam plant was planned in Marion. Jim Bateman of Murphysboro said conditions look better as Turner White of Electric Energy Inc. would attend, along with leaders from all Joppa crafts and striking carpenters. The Joppa Chamber of Commerce urged workers to return to avoid harming Southern Illinois. the chamber helped attract the plant to the area decades ago.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles conferred with Prime Minister Churchill and Foreign Secretary Eden over the U S shift toward Formosa. Britain voiced strong disapproval fearing political repercussions and potential conflict between Chinese Nationalists and Communists, while Dulles pledged no intent to widen the Korean War. Also present were Harold Stassen and Julius C Holmes as the Far East situation was reviewed.
Scientists from the World Health Organization report developing a preventive influenza vaccine expected to wipe out the scourge of flu. They say the vaccine would work against all types of flu viruses and aim for deployment next year.
Former Commerce Department economist William W. Remington, 35, was sentenced by Federal Judge Vincent L. Leibell to three years in prison for perjury in a case tied to espionage allegations. The case involved claims he lied about sharing secret information with Elizabeth Bentley and knowing of a Young Communists League at Dartmouth.
Conductor Leopold Stowkowski interrupted a performance with the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at Municipal Auditorium on Tuesday night to protest carnival ball noise in the building twice. Nick F. Johnson, 33, was returned to Omaha to face a first degree murder charge in the deaths of Dr. B W Hall, 75, and his 87-year-old wife. He was arrested at North Platte after fleeing with Hall’s car, and officials noted his composure when presented with the warrant. Johnson denied involvement, claiming the car was given to him in Sioux City.
