Winter storm wallops West and Midwest with snow and wind
A strong winter storm dumped heavy snow across the West and Midwest while spreading icy roads to the East. Up to 14 inches fell in parts as far south as North Carolina, with dire travel warnings and power outages. Several deaths were blamed as winds gusted to 70 mph in the Northeast. Bangor floodwaters forced motorists to swim. Maine rivers began receding after damage runs into millions. Navy injuries reported in Virginia as storms delayed amphibious groups. Chicago and Rockford posted record cold. Warmer weather was expected but with possible new snow.

Shawneetown nurse charged in Chicago nursing home fire
Shawneetown native Denise Watson a nurse’s aide 21 was charged with arson and felony murder in a North Side nursing home fire that killed 15 and injured more than 30. Watson worked less than three weeks at Crest Manor when the blaze began.
