Record Fire Engulfs Old Shoe Factory in Jamaica Plain

More than 300 firefighters battled a large blaze at the Plant Shoe Co building in Jamaica Plain. The six story brick complex housed about 40 residents, with no serious injuries reported though five firefighters were lightly hurt. The fire, of suspected origin, involved three separate outbreaks after 10 p.m. Sunday. Police noted a sprinkler system, recently installed, was shut off when the fire began but activated by responders. officials have not determined why. Damage exceeded $1 million.

Free Bus Ride Lands 46 Citizens in Jail

Chicago police charged 46 passengers 34 men and 12 women with theft of service and theft of property after boarding a CTA bus without paying. The driver activated the alarm, police arrived with five officers and six squad cars to escort them to the station. Bond was set at $100.
