U S Army 1st Air Cavalry Division repulsed a five hour assault by about 300 North Vietnamese at an artillery base 45 miles northwest of Saigon. Helicopters gunships fighters and artillery aided the defense. Two U S soldiers were killed and 31 wounded. The base yielded 70 tons of rice and bunkers with uniforms.
The Vatican opened the door to psychoanalysis and other methods to modernize training for priests nuns and lay brothers. A 10,000 word decree approved by Pope Paul VI urges periods of trial in the world before permanent vows to reduce departures from religious life.

In a Senate bid to halt deployment of the Sentinel ballistic missile defense system a bipartisan bloc plans to block funding and probes into military industry influence. The Illinois Central Railroad mail, once employing 84 clerks on 13 cars, ends its Carbondale to Chicago RPO service with a final northbound run Saturday night. First class mail shifts to air, truck, and sealed pouches. piggyback rail cars carry other mail. Carbondale Post Office expects to add six former RPO clerks. Centralia may receive others.
President Nixon summoned his key foreign advisers to the White House to review crisis in the Middle East. They discussed rapid diplomatic efforts, possible negotiations with the Soviet Union, and tying the nuclear nonproliferation treaty into a broader settlement, with a follow up meeting planned.
At a Cairo meeting, President Gamal Abdel Nasser renewed full support for Palestinian commandos. He urged Arab states to prioritize the commandos as self defense, praising them as a beacon lighting the way for all Arabs, despite 23 of 105 council members being absent.
Paris reports the United States and NATO members have presented France with notes totaling about 800 million dollars for residual value of more than 400 installations left behind after Charles de Gaulle expelled NATO forces. France studies the notes and plans to reject them, while debates focus on what constitutes residual value and liability for U S and NATO funded facilities built 1950 to 1966.

The Treasury Department under the Johnson era outlined a reform aiming to make income tax fairer. It would ensure all the rich pay tax but cap total federal income tax at 50 percent of income, remove about 1.25 million poor from the rolls, and set a $3,000 maximum annual income for a family of four. The plan largely leaves middle earners unaffected and simplifies by expanding the standard deduction.
James L. Farmer, former national director of CORE, is considered for a top post in the Health Education and Welfare Department under the Nixon administration. He says there is a possibility of joining as assistant secretary after discussions with HEW Secretary Robert Finch, noting Finch as a respected leader who would oversee programs for the poor. The move would mark a high level civil rights appointment by the new government.
