Ike and Eden outline steps and discussions to bring snow to the college campus for the famed Winter Carnival this weekend. A Wednesday photo shows the efforts and progress toward the festival’s snowy theme.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Eden closed a three day conference with a Wash ington declaration urging peace in the Middle East and warning against Communist expansion. They called for three power talks with France and outlined measures including UN pe acekeeping, policing of the demilitarized zone, and possible trade and financial sanctions.
Virginia legislators backed a resolution of interposition denouncing the U S Supreme Court school integration ruling as an encroachment on state sovereignty. The move follows renewed tensions stirred by a recent Alabama bomb incident and signals Virginia’s continued interposition stance.
President Eisenhower's physician said he is not yet in a position to decide on a second term four and a half months after a heart attack. The White House doctor declined to specify how much time is needed, saying only that Eisenhower should have all the time he needs. The remark disappointed GOP backers hoping for an early announcement.
Dr A G Hill of MIT testified to a House subcommittee on civil defense that planning hints point to a hydrogen bomb possibly reaching 50 megatons. He noted Hiroshima’s 20 kiloton equivalent, with 2,500 times its power. Earlier speculation placed Bikini Atoll tests at 15 to 17 megatons, wiping a small island.
More young men may be drafted to serve for shorter periods in a temporary move to bolster the lagging ready reserve program. Secretary of Defense Wilson disclosed the plan at a news conference. It would cut active service from 24 to 18 months for as many as 100,000 draftees who stay in the ready reserve for 24% years, with draft calls adjusted to replace them. The program would be temporary and extend no later than June 1957.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to raise postal rates citing a report from Postmaster General Summerfield that the Mail Service loses about 1,000 dollars a minute. He proposed increased rates totaling 406 million dollars annually and a first class letter rate from 3 to 4 cents, signaling a pushed reform in a tight election year.
Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp reports leasing facilities at Ordill in Crab Orchard Refuge for an explosives operation. The project, with over a million dollars in terms not disclosed, will add buildings and hire about 150 workers, targeting production by late 1956. The Ordill site lies in Load Line 2, with Carterville listed as the mailing address.

Bob Burns, famed comic of a by gone era noted for his bazooka footing and Arkansas jokes, died in Encino California from cancer after a six day coma. The 63 year old Arkansas native had recent years been active in San Fernando Valley real estate.
Tenley Albright won the Olympic women's figure skating title despite leg pain to complete a U S sweep in women's and men’s events. Hayes Alan Jenkins won the men’s championship, giving the United States a rare dual sweep, the first since 1920. Carol Heiss also dazzled fans as a strong contender.
Japan informed the United States it has no objection to proposed hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific this year but asked for precautions, Kyodo News Service reported.
The Ex Plosives division announced a new plant in the Orcill area. The unoccupied buildings are owned by the U.S. government and were formerly used by the Hoosier.
President Eisenhower told about 500 at the fourth annual prayer breakfast that the spirit of Geneva helped show the United States intends to establish a just peace for the world. He noted Russian hopes for Western cooperation have not been realized since the Geneva summit and read his preinaugural prayer.
Dr. Paul Dudley White, heart specialist to President Eisenhower, departs from Los Angeles for a National Geographic Society sponsored voyage toward the Baja California peninsula to study pulsebeats of a gray whale. He aims to gain data on the human heart by observing the whale’s heartbeat, capping years of animal heartbeat research.
In Jacksonville on February 2, the Elbers brothers faced burglary charges for stealing a safe. Joe, 34, testified he acted alone and demonstrated by lifting a 300-pound safe to the witness stand. The jury acquitted William, 42, while Joe was convicted of burglary and awaits sentencing.
Colin P. Kelly III, son of WW II hero Colin P. Kelly Jr., is identified as a 15 year old West Point hopeful. The Roosevelt letter, written 10 days after Pearl Harbor, urged consideration for his cadet appointment. Eisenhower, with White House approval, confirms Corky is interested but will wait until at least age 17 for eligibility. The letter was found in the National Archives and routed through the White House. Corky attends Westtown Friends School in Pennsylvania and lives with his mother and stepfather.
Chicago owner George Halas named Paddy Driscoll as head coach to succeed Halas. Driscoll, a former Northwestern standout and longtime Bears drop kick specialist, has been an assistant coach for 15 years. Contract terms were not disclosed.
