The School Problems Commission will reconvene February 18 in Chicago to decide state financial aid for grade and high schools. A revised aide formula was rejected and a substitute plan failed to materialize. Governor Stratton has pledged to maintain current support for two years, though finances may limit future funds. John Cox questioned how much state money could be counted on.
Fighting flared in the Tachens with Nationalist and Communist forces trading bombs and guns while Washington and Nationalist China negotiate the future of Chiang Kai-shek’s offshore outposts. Nationalist planes clashed with MIG15 fighters, diving on Yikiangshan and Toumen despite heavy antiaircraft fire. An impending Washington announcement is expected to outline U S policy toward the Tachens and other island posts such as Quemoy and Matsu.
Area crowds estimated near 2000 watched Air Lines inaugurate service to Williamson County at the airport this morning. The 24 passenger silver twin engine plane landed at 10 30 a m, eighteen passengers debarked at the Williamson County Airport four miles south of Herrin on Rt 148. J F Skinner of St Louis was first off the plane flanked by ROTC cadets and notable locals. Marine S Sgt Dick Mitchell of Murphysboro noted the event as a polio fundraiser and recalled his earlier success. Pat Bruce SIU ROTC queen and Miss Illinois was ninth off the plane. Officials from SIU TWA American Eastern Braniff and Delta C S Airlines joined local dignitaries including Fred Carstens and Arthur E Abney. Abney praised the work behind the ceremony and recalled learning to fly at Marion under Fred Valentin. He said the event represents much effort by many people and signaled a bright future for regional air service.

Kankakee Feb 1 AP Officials nationwide are alerted after a four passenger Pi Clipper plane was reported stolen from Kankakee Airport. Owner James Warren Jr. of Kankakee discovered the loss on Monday after returning from a business trip to Washington. The plane is valued at about $4 000.

Joseph P. Ryan 71 former New York longshoremen union boss received six months in prison and a $2,500 fine for illegally taking money from a hiring firm. His lawyer called him physically and mentally broken. Ryan is president emeritus of the International Longshoremen's Association, which recently won a dispute to represent the city’s dock workers.
