Gov Stratton ordered 213 National Guardsmen to assist state police on Illinois highways during the New Year weekend. Guardsmen will report at 9 a.m. Saturday and operate under state police direction, with 12 hour shifts for patrolmen and leaves canceled.
Delayed reports push Chicago area holiday traffic deaths past 609, with 629 highway fatalities during the holiday period and 34 additional deaths by noon Thursday. The total toll reaches 663 and is expected to rise as figures stabilize.
The forecast calls for fair and colder conditions in Southern Illinois with daytime highs around 34 degrees and nights near 17. Temperatures yesterday reached 53 with a 7 am reading of 43, and lake levels at Crab Orchard Lake are 25 inches below spillway while Little Grassy Lake sits 101 inches below spillway.

The National Safety Council projects 1955 traffic deaths at 38,500 the highest in 14 years. Based on 34,690 deaths in the first 11 months and later AP state records, the total would top 36,000 last year and 39,969 in 1941. November deaths reached 3,680 and 420 are forecast for the New Year weekend.
The Association of American Law Schools prepared to vote on a plan to deny membership to any law school refusing to admit a qualified Negro student. The 109-institution body split as supporters and opponents debated the proposal at the annual meeting. Harvard figures led criticism while others defended the aim of improving the profession.
California flood toll rose to 47 with 12 additional deaths since Wednesday. Singer Monica Lewis aged 28 to wed Jennings Lang 40 in Santa Monica California on New Year Day and will honeymoon in New York afterward according to AP reports.
A Guernsey County man surveys the wreckage of a twin engine plane that crashed on a hillside near Freeport Ohio Thursday afternoon. The craft carried two passengers who died in the explosion and fire. Victims tentatively identified as Lloyd Cotton 35 and Gordon Silva 46 both of Tulsa Oklahoma.
Norfolk Virginia December 30 AP hearing on embezzlement charges against Minnie C Mangum postponed as auditors probe firm records for shortages possibly exceeding one million dollars. Mangum assistant secretary treasurer of the Commonwealth Building and Loan Assn charged with embezzling 100000 in past year with larger irregularities suggested over five years.
The Dionne family welcomed Yvonne Cecile and Annette with Oliva Jr and two youths from Montreal as parents Mr and Mrs Oliva Dionne were not at the door. The purpose was to patch up rifts sparked by accusations this week that the surviving quints drifted from the family. Marie remained away due to illness. Emilie died in 1954.
A 19 year old mother, Kathryn Davis, says she shot her sons John 9 and Kevin 21 months to death, claiming people looked down on her since release from a sanitarium. Husband John Zavis found the bodies as she wept. police report the killings occurred during a TV viewing and nap time.
Dr. Alvin Graves, 46, who since 1948 directed all American atomic tests, suffered a heart attack here Thursday afternoon. His blood pressure and pulse were reported satisfactory late Thursday night. Graves is director of the test division at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, a post he has held since 1944.
Gen Laurence S Kuter in the Army Navy Air Force Journal says Communist air strength in Asia exceeds U S forces. He cites about 7 000 Communist aircraft vs 2 000 U S planes in the Far East and notes MiGs in North Korea and new bases. He also notes U S B 57 jets replace obsolete B 26 bombers in Japan.
Lester R. Grimm of Springfield, research director for the Illinois Education Assn., told IEA delegates that Illinois school enrollment now stands at 1 million and will reach two million in 1965. He said enrollment grows about 60,000 pupils yearly, requiring thousands more teachers and many new classrooms.

Baltimore motorists too intoxicated to drive can call for free paddy wagon rides home over New Year’s Eve, as the AP reports. The program aims to reduce drunk driving by offering safe transportation.
More than 40 previously secret Yalta documents are published in a 1,032 page Government Printing Office volume. The items include notes from Stalin and Roosevelt aides and footnotes on postwar plans and demilitarization. The collection follows last March’s public release of most Yalta papers and costs 5.50 per copy. School officials and government sources supplied the material, with notes on Hopkins Churchill talks and the Quebec meeting.
