Johnston City bank fire threatens three story building

Firefighters from Johnston City Herrin Marion Du Quoin and Harrisburg battled a morning blaze at the Johnston City State Bank 100 W Broad Way. The fire broke through the roof around 1130 am and was contained by noon as cooling water pressure hampered efforts in sub freezing weather.

Illinois 1968 Road Plan Marks Big State Construction

Gov. Otto Kerner announced Illinois 1968 highway program totaling 364.584 million dollars funded by heavier federal aid and a one cent gas tax hike. The plan prioritizes Interstate routes with 207 million and primary highways with 111.1 million, and includes a cushion of 45.784 million to cover delays in right of way, planning, and interagency agreements. District 6 leads with 12.995 million, while Cook County’s district totals 93.208 million. I-57 I-70 I-74 and I-55 projects will largely complete cross‑state progress including bridges and paving across multiple counties.

Illinois District 9 Highway Plans Include 1968 Skew

The Illinois Division of Highways proposes 1968 District 9 spending of 16.808 million dollars a dip of 50 thousand from 1967. Total state road program is 318.8 million up 50.3 million with Southern Illinois at 5.3 percent share in 1968 from 6.3 in 1967. District 9 funds focus on Franklin Randolph and Gallatin counties including Rt 183 Rend Lake two lanes and Rt 13 connections with right of way and bridges in Randolph Gallatin and Perry counties. Interstate Rt 57 improvements spanning 350 miles Chicago to north of Cairo will cost 9.121 million in district 9 with total interstate 207.7 million statewide. Illinois contributions include 3.4 million toward the intersta te Rt 24 bridge at Massac County and 190 thousand for right of way in Williamson Johnson and Massac for Rt 24.

Carmi Fears Major Flood as Rivers Rise

Rising water from the Little Wabash River and Skillet Fork trapped Carmi residents while forecasts warned of more rain. White County farms faced flood damage and the Big Wabash flooded areas east of town. About six families evacuated to shelters as Carmi’s flood stage reached 33.5 feet at the bridge.

U S Planes Strafe South Vietnamese by Mistake

U S Air Force Canberra bombers strafed a South Vietnamese irregular unit in Binh Thuan Province killing four and wounding 34, including two American advisers. The incident near Saigon prompted an U S 7th Air Force inquiry. Marines later fought 500 Viet Cong near Da Nang with 17 Marines and 37 enemies killed and 30 wounded. Navy boats in the Mekong Delta repelled a Viet Cong party after one gunner hit a patrol boat injuring all five crewmen.

Three Year GM Contract Ratified by UAW

Detroit AP reports the United Auto Workers announced a three year national pact covering about 380000 GM workers. Leonard Woodcock said skilled workers approved 312 to 1 and production workers 5 to 1. Local negotiations were to be stepped up as 114 GM locals were notified.

SIU maps plan to diffuse medical education across Illinois

Southern Illinois University proposes regional medical centers in Rockford Peoria and Springfield plus underutilized areas to broaden medical education. An Illinois Institute of Health and an Illinois Medical Information Network Medinet would coordinate research data telemedicine and education statewide.
