Nixon says international communism mortally wounded by Hungarian sacrifice

Vice President Nixon told reporters at Washington airport that international communism has suffered a mortal blow from which it cannot recover due to the sacrifices of the Hungarian people. He urged rapid U.S. action to help find new homes for about 175,000 Hungarian refugees and outlined plans to present recommendations to President Eisenhower.

Red Chinese Premier To Visit Poland

Warsaw radio announced that Communist Chinese Premier Chou En-lai will visit Poland in mid January. The visit follows Soviet plans to interrupt his South Asian tour to Moscow and discuss Kremlin troubles with its satellites. Herrin Jaycee Wounded During Christmas Mission

A Herrin Jaycee was wounded in action on a Christmas mission Saturday. H. T. Parks of Parks Cleaners was bitten by a dog while delivering a food basket to a local family. Other Junior Chamber members delivered 189 additional baskets without incident.

Crash Probe Set In Carbondale

An Illinois Commerce Commission probe into the Illinois Central Railroad crash near Belleville last Friday will move to Carbondale on Wednesday for car inspections. The formal hearing is not expected for a week or 10 days. Conductor O B Castelberry remains critical in Belleville. The accident killed two, injured more than 30, with five still hospitalized in good condition.

Jesse Grant Dies at 64 in Marion Heart Attack

Jesse W. Grant of Marion died of a heart attack shortly after 11 a m. He was walking from his home east of the Third Baptist Church through the county fairgrounds toward a grocery when he was stricken. Mitchell Funeral Home of Marion is in charge of arrangements.

Carbondale Boy and Nephew Escape Serious Injuries in Crash

A 15 year old Carbondale boy and his six year old nephew escaped serious injury when their car crashed into a tree on Carbonale Reservoir road. They were treated at Doctors Hospital in Carbondale and released. James Hagler six suffered minor bruises Herbert Hagler fifteen a minor scalp laceration.

Wanted Gift For Mommy Boy Loses Leas

Nine year old Robert Forbes Long in Everett Washington lost both legs after a switching engine ran over him while he hunted for bottles in the Northern Pacific yards. He asked ambulance driver Lonnie Nichols to deliver a Christmas present for his mother and collected 16 cents to buy it. Police firemen and railroad workers contributed after word spread. Remaining funds will help start a fund for an artificial limb. Robert, child of Mr and Mrs Robert B Long, remains in fair but critical condition after multiple transfusions. he recognized his parents at the hospital.

Mother and four children die in downtown apartment fire

A flash fire in a five story downtown apartment in Deckden, Genn. killed a mother Julia Morales Rios 79 and her children Gladys 17 Isobel 6 Eddie Nelson 4 and Eddie 3. An injured child and wounded uncle are described. Police noted the building housed Puerto Ricans with few speaking English.
