Carbondale district expects tax cut after levy vote
Homeowners in the Carbondale high school district should see a tax decline under the 2002 levy approved Thursday night. The levy rises to 5,678,997 from 5,600,000, yet higher property value growth should offset the rate drop from 2.03 to about 1.99 per 100 of assessed value, saving a $60,000 home about 4.95. The county tax cap triggers a hearing if increases exceed 1.6 percent. Superintendent Sabens notes about 800,000 in taxes are abated by the one-quarter percent sales tax tied to the Superblock project and new high school. Substantial completion is expected in January with summer work to ready for potential summer school.
