Postman recalls busy Christmases as mail declines in 1981
Carbondale postal veteran Alvin Griffith notes holiday mail is down about 12 percent in 1981 across 183 Southern Illinois post offices, with 336000 fewer pieces during peak week. Higher postage and weak economy curb greetings, while memories of longer shifts in the 1950s and 60s linger.

Coal industry's 1981 strike overshadows safety record
Evan M. Davis reports that Southern Illinois coal production held near 5 million tons monthly in 1981, totaling far less than 1980 due to a March 27 to June 6 UMW strike. The year saw a hoped for fatality-free record unless December ends with a death, while a major strike cost families about $60 million in wages.
