Major banks cut prime rate to 6 percent this year
Chase Manhattan led a broad round of prime rate cuts to 6 percent from 7 percent as loan demand slackens. Banks including Bank of America, First National City, Chemical, Irving Trust, Cleveland Trust, First National Bank of St. Louis and Citizens & Southern followed. National City Bank of Minneapolis trimmed to 6 1/2 percent citing a 12 percent drop in loans.

Angela Davis transported to Marin County jail
Angela Davis was moved from New York to Marin County for contempt of court related to the San Quentin escape attempt. She is charged with murder and kidnapping after the August 7 courthouse shootout in San Rafael, where a judge was killed and three escapees died. The transfer was arranged by Marin County district attorney with a California National Guard plane.
