Algiers reports rising casualties with at least 89 killed since Tuesday as French troops sweep the Nemenda Range south of Constantine. Warplanes join ground forces while militants threaten Moslems who oppose their cause and French elections, now postponed, loom.
Maurice E. Travis a 45 year old union official was found guilty of filing false non Communist affidavits with the National Labor Relations Board for 1951 and 1952. The former secretary treasurer of the International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers is now regional representative in Los Angeles. Judge Breitenstein set Jan 13 for new trial motions to be filed and Feb 15 for hearings.
Forecasts show cloudy weather and rising temperatures for southern Illinois. Tonight lows near 35 with Friday highs around 50, then Friday night in the upper 30s. Reading notes about lake levels show Crab Orchard Lake 25 inches below spillway and Little Grassy Lake 101 inches below spillway.

He asserts independence even if endorsed by Democrats and pledges to donate his salary to charity while restructuring the treasury office after firing top staff.
Illinois Commerce Commission served cease and desist orders on 350 rail, bus, and airline carriers to desegregate passengers in the state. ICC Chairman George Perrine cited widespread segregation in southern Illinois, with specific practices reported on Illinois Central GM&O and Southern lines and in buses, while north of St. Louis few instances were noted.
President and Mrs. Eisenhower welcomed their fourth grandchild, a daughter named Mary Jean, born to Maj. John Eisenhower and Barbara Eisenhower at Walter Reed Army Hospital. John Eisenhower informed the president by phone as Mrs. Eisenhower arrived at the airport to greet her mother. The First Family planned to greet about 700 White House staff, with possible post holiday travel plans discussed by officials.

Jefferson City Missouri AP aide reports Judge Sam Blair received a Christmas card from inmate Jane at Missouri State Penitentiary. The back of the card carried a handwritten plea for a writ of habeas corpus which the judge denied.
Illinois forecasters say a white Christmas is unlikely as a warm trend lifts highs above freezing. Friday temperatures are expected to reach the upper 30s in the north and around 50 in the south.
