In Shallmar Maryland three thousand dollars and six and a half tons of clothing and food have arrived to feed and clothe the destitute town’s 80 children and 200 residents. Neighbors in Maryland and West Virginia receive Shallmar’s remaining gifts as the town shares holiday bounty with nearby families.
The Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives filed a resolution against the Illinois Federation of Retail Association charging unfair distortions. It asserts that only three of 27 rural co-ops sell appliances and that REA loans are not for appliance funding. The IEC says co-ops are private, taxpaying businesses and that appliance sales stem from service gaps by local merchants. About 105,000 Illinois co-op members have spent nearly 200 million with local merchants for electrical equipment.
The National Safety Council predicted 435 people will die in traffic accidents during the three day Christmas weekend, the largest pre holiday toll yet. Ned H Dearborn said the estimate may be too high if Americans drive carefully and stay alert while walking.
