A government study shows since the early 1960s Americans have grown heavier on average, rising 1 to 14 pounds depending on height. Taller individuals gained more, with men peaking at 35 to 44 and women often increasing until 55 to 64, while women over 55 showed no gains.
President Carter outlined a forthcoming tax program to reduce taxes for all, offsetting higher Social Security costs. The plan, to be unveiled early next year, targets a $20 to $30 billion relief for individuals and businesses, with possible $5 billion in excise tax cuts including telephone and air travel taxes.
