SIU falls behind early as Western Michigan uses a 15 point opening run and consistent post play by Joe Reitz to build a double digit lead. Falker and Mullins struggle with early fouls and the Salukis never recover, trailing 57 41 at the final horn.
SIU sank to under .500 after a 41 point night marked by team wide shooting struggles. Joshua Bone opened with a 3 but none followed as WMU pulled away 70s-? The Salukis were outhustled, allowing Joe Reitz 20 points and 11 rebounds while Randal Falker and Matt Shaw struggled.
SiU guard Joshua Bone made only one 3 pointer and failed to reach the free throw line as a sophomore, while Bryan Mullins shot 3 of 10 and fouled out early. The Salukis' backcourt struggled offensively despite defensive improvements, with Bone and Mullins unable to match last year's guard performance.
SIU's Randal Falker led with nine points and nine rebounds but shot 20 percent and was largely a nonfactor. Matt Shaw went 3 of 11 from the floor and missed all five 3s. Tony Boyle produced 20 minutes with limited impact as Western Michigan grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and Joe Reitz dominated LIU with 20 points and 11 boards.
After a rough game vs Saint Louis, Wesley Clemmons gains footing as Tyrone Green shoots once and makes it, Carlton Fay improves, yet SIU lacks a reliable backup point guard. If Clemmons Fay Green and Wood stay healthy the bench could become effective, but it isn’t there yet.
Top Dave Bryan Mullins posted nine points on 3 of 10 shooting and one of ten from three, with five assists, five steals, two early fouls, and 38 minutes. He was SIU's most aggressive player on both ends, penetrating to create chances while pressuring Western Michigan ballhandlers and playing every minute of the second half.
Western Michigan dominated SIU 57 to 41 as the Broncos held a 27 to 16 halftime lead. Mullins Fay and Bone combined for SIU three pointers while Kool Herschberger Redell Drews and McLemore fueled WMU from long range. Turnovers favored WMU 18 to 15 in a game attended by 3168 fans.
SIU fell short despite solid defense as the Salukis could not score consistently against a quality opponent. The performance, among the worst in Chris Lowery's tenure, raises questions about contention for the Missouri Valley title and sets up a must-turnaround three-game homestand.
