Census Bureau revises U S population outlook for 2000
New projections from the Census Bureau suggest the 2000 U S population could range from 251 million to 300 million, down from earlier estimates. Birth rates have fallen sharply, with first-half 1972 fertility at 2.1 births per woman, raising the possibility of zero population growth before 2050 if immigration remains around 400,000 annually.
