Tax clash as Landowners seek to dissolve Carbondale levy

Landowners and registered voters in Carbondale challenge a downtown property tax aimed at funding the Main Street revitalization program. Attorneys say petitions may fall short of required 51 percent thresholds, with critics like SIU student Pat Kelly arguing the levy unfairly hits short-term residents. The tax is 54 cents per $100 of assessed value, about $90 more yearly for a $50,000 property.

She plans no decorations to keep the act quiet, hoping the tree stands as a lasting reminder of strangers’ kindness.
