Miller rises in miners movement and challenges Boyle
Arnold Miller, son and grandson of coal miners, emerged from the Black Lung movement to challenge Tony Boyle for UMW leadership. He campaigned on local control, lower salaries, and better health benefits, accusing Boyle of centralization and weak safety. Miller helped form the Miners for Democracy and vowed to push for pensions, sick leave, and stricter royalty funding for welfare and retirement.
