Death row population drops in U S for first time in 25 years

The Justice Department reports fewer death row prisoners in 2001, with the population falling from 3,601 in 2000 to 3,581 in 2001, the first year-to-year decline in 25 years. Sixty-six executions occurred in 2001, while 68 have been executed by Dec. 11 this year. prosecutors show more restraint and plea bargains for life without parole.

New Boston Archdiocese Overseer Calls For Healing At Mass

Bishop Richard Lennon, named apostolic administrator of the scandal scarred Boston Archdiocese, urged healing and reconciliation at Cathedral of the Holy Cross. He pledged to shepherd the archdiocese while a permanent successor to Cardinal Bernard Law is sought amid abuse settlements, bankruptcy fears, and a grand jury probe. Protesters and victims urged tangible healing as Law returned to Boston with no public appearances.

Passengers Ill On Carnival Conquest Norwalk Virus

More than 200 guests aboard the Carnival Conquest reported gastrointestinal illness on a voyage ending Sunday. Carnival treated the illness as Norwalk-like and said it is working with the CDC to determine the cause.
