Winter birds of Southern Illinois attract feeders and watchers
Regional editor Ben Gelman outlines winter bird life in Southern Illinois. Permanent residents include pileated and downy woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays, wrens, titmice, chickadees and mockingbirds, with winter visitors such as purple finches and juncos. He notes roosting blackbirds near towns can be a nuisance and suggests feeders and refuges like Crab Orchard and Horseshoe Lake for viewing large species and waterfowl. The southern region’s diverse habitats support rich winter birdwatching, as evidenced by the annual Audubon Christmas census conducted December 29 in the area.
