Nationwide alert to reserve troops signals Gulf war option
Defense officials say about 27,000 National Guard and Reserve members may be alerted for possible active duty likely in the Persian Gulf, while 100,000 more could be mobilized if war with Iraq occurs. Already on active duty are about 51,000 for homeland defense duties.
