Water district dispute risks Carbondale plans

Carbondale faces disruption to its water and sewer improvement program if the Greater Egypt Economic Development District dissolves due to Williamson County leaving the five county area. City Manager C William Norman says most EDA funded projects would be hard to replace, though a $2.1 million EDA grant for a new sewage plant is secured. The district’s collapse could jeopardize about $6.5 million in water project funding and Cedar Creek Dam plans. If Williamson remains out, Franklin would be the sole distressed county, undermining district eligibility. Continue efforts for a compromise while noting the federal EDA rules on districts and growth centers. Also reported death: Lowell S Weatherly, 62, of Murphysboro, with details of his service and survivors.
