Tax Dodgers Pay 470000 in LaSalle County Collections

Ottawa December 14 The four year drive against personal property tax dodging in LaSalle County has collected about 470000 in delinquent taxes. The sum covers taxes assessed 1952 and earlier totaling 241436 in 1953 102057 in 1954 65410 in 1955 and 23018 in 1956. Delinquencies for 1955 are nearly cleared and 1956 obligations total 75510 from 1664 taxpayers.

Blast Kills Five in Pusan Factory Blast

Five employees were killed and three seriously injured in a blast at an explosives manufacturing plant in Pusan Korea. Police said careless handling by one of the victims triggered the explosion.

Students Raise $271 for St Joseph Memorial Hospital Drive

Murphysboro High School students collected 271.94 for the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital fund. David Hines handed the money to Mrs. William Muhlenbrock during a Friday assembly. The sophomore class led with 103.75, followed by seniors 83.52, freshmen 12.46, juniors 8.56, plus 20 from the M club, 15 from the Future Farmers of America, and 28.60 from a basketball game.

Quads Born in London Report Largest British Record

In London on December 14 a caesarean birth brought two boys and two girls to Mrs. Mary Bennett, 37, wife of a dock laborer. Hospital officials said the quadruplets may be the largest set in British medical annals and all four weighed more than four pounds. They were reported doing well.

U.N. Approves Suez Surcharge for Clearance Work

The General Assembly voted 54 to 0 with 19 abstentions to levy a 3 percent surcharge on all Suez Canal shipping for three years. The funds aim to remove more than 40 sunken vessels bridges and obstructions in the canal after the 1956 conflict. Dag Hammarskjold proposed the plan which would raise about 8 375 000 dollars.

Girl Found Feet Frozen After Five Day Exposure

A 15 year old girl Rosella Auxier was found unconscious and in shock in an abandoned store in Louisville Kentucky after five days missing. Her legs were packed in ice to limit thawing and doctors say she faces a long recovery with no immediate surgery.

South Korean ship sinks in Tsushima Strait

A South Korean merchant ship sank in the Tsushima Strait between Japan and South Korea on Friday. Fourteen crew members were reported missing by the Japanese Coast Guard, while one crew member was rescued by a nearby Japanese fishing boat.

Murphysboro Fund Drive Sets Firsts Record for Hospital

Fund Drive Chairman Larry Lane said the Murphysboro effort for a new St Joseph Memorial Hospital set a record for a first and showed strong local participation with more than 1,800 pledges representing about 10 percent of the area population. Lane noted cooperation overcame potential $600,000 shortfall and highlighted few large gifts in the drive.
