The unit will operate in Dongola Wednesday finishing there then move to Mill Creek Thursday Ware Station Friday and Anna. Items such as current newspapers will be buried for 100 years in a stainless steel cylinder at Alexandria Virginia.
The Union County Tuberculosis Association announces a final stopping point for the chest x ray mobile unit in Anna. It will be stationed near Lewis Brothers bakery opposite the post office on Saturday and next Tuesday and Wednesday. Any adult who missed a prior x ray may receive free service by registering on those days.
In 1949 Cobden Community High School expands Vocational Agriculture with a new 70 by 30 foot farm shop and an 18 by 30 foot classroom separated by glass. Students in Agriculture II and freshmen work on wiring, tool cabinets, benches, and soil testing while planning future units in machinery, maintenance, and building repairs. Approximately 50 veterans are also noted among 52 vocational agriculture students.
Herrin will host the southern section of the Illinois grade school band contest in May, after a split of the state into northern and southern sections. C B Nesler, longtime director, said about 25 schools are likely to participate and dates will avoid weekday bus shortages. Cities from the south include East St. Louis, Belleville, Springfield, Charleston, Effingham, and Lawrenceville, with as many as 1500 students expected from the Belleville Effingham Carbondale district contests. New officers for the south district are Charles Loomis, Everett Crane, and David Welch.
Christmas activities at University School close with a 10 am carol service staged by elementary grades in the Allyn building. The program features We Come All Ye Faithful Joy To The World O Come Little Children First Noel Hark the Herald Angels Sing Jolly Old St Nicholas O Little Town of Bethlehem Bring a Torch and more led by Miss Margaretta Carey with Mrs Elizabeth Meehan assisting.
