State sues firms over telemarketing cramming schemes
Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan says he is suing three out of state companies for billing thousands of Illinois residents for unwanted services. Two lawsuits in Sangamon County seek injunctions and up to 50000 in restitution and penalties. Mercury Marketing of Delaware and Gointernet.Net with Neal Saferstein face charges for billing over 12000 residents more than 1.5 million dollars for unwanted Internet services. World Voice Link of Bedford Texas and president James Tressler are accused of charging Illinoisans for unauthorized voice mail services between August 2001 and October this year. Consumer complaints cite 1995 setup and 19.95 monthly charges on bills after telemarketing pitches.
