Test Pit Finds Rich Salt Making Site Near Equality
Irvin Peithman and John Allen at Southern Illinois University document three test pits near the Saline river southeast of Equality revealing thick pottery, clay fireplaces, ash, and charcoal indicating extensive prehistoric salt making. The site links Mississippian culture to long running salt brine exploitation later taken over by settlers during the 19th century boom.
