The First Marine Division endured more than 30 percent casualties in a key breakout from a Chinese trap in Korea. Estimates suggest 6,000 to 7,000 losses across the 1st 5th and 7th infantry regiments including weather injuries and those killed wounded or missing.
Australian lawmakers sampled whale steak after noting that much Antarctic whale catch goes to waste. The meal by members of parliament was reported without recording their reactions.
A northbound Pennsylvania passenger train derailed after hitting a landslide near Fitler blocking tracks. Four crewmen and 13 passengers were injured, none seriously, as four cars and the locomotive derailed while four rear sleepers stayed on the rails. Heavy rain and snow loosened rocks and soil from the hillside.
A first grade teacher Thelma Schick aged 35 and a four months old infant were killed in a Monday automobile collision in Sterling. Thelma Schick taught at Wallace school.
An accident seven miles west of Sterling at Route 30 and Alternate Route 30 involved two cars. The four months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Jackson Phillips of Charlotte Iowa and the Phipps infant were not badly hurt but the parents sustained cuts and bruises and were taken to Sterling Community General Hospital. Miss Schick, driving alone from Thomson, was involved in the crash.
